Florida Rainy Day Tips and tricks to make the most of your Florida trip in the rainy season

If you are visiting Central Florida or plant to stay here, you need to be aware that we get a lot of rain storms in the summer months. They typically hit around three in the afternoon but the time is variable. So let’s talk about what you can do to prepare for the rain so that it doesn’t ruin your Florida fun.

Rainy Day Tips for Theme Parks

Let’s start with the theme parks. I know that a lot of people who come to the Central Florida area come for our awesome theme parks. After all, we have some of the best ones here! So what happens on days when it rains on your vacation?

Keep an eye on the radar.

We have a saying in Central Florida, “If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes.” Having a radar such as intellicast on your phone can help you to see if a storm is going to be a quick mover or stick around for a while. This can help you to decide what your next steps need to be.

Plan fast passes and ride reservations during the rainy hours of the day.

Are you planning to ride rides like Soarin, Avatar, Escape from Gringotts, or any other indoor rides? These rides are a great place to be when it rains. However, everyone will head to these areas to escape the rain. If you set up your fast pass for those times you will have the ability to get out of the rain without worrying about the crowds preventing your escape.

Pack  rain gear

It can be tempting to do a park day with no backpack or items to carry. However, if you are going to get caught in the parks on a rainy day it can help to have a few items on hand. Here are a few of my favorites.

  • Poncho – Having a poncho can be a help on a rainy day. It’s a great way to keep you from getting drenched.
  • Pool shoes/flip flops – Kids can hate getting their feet wet. Plan to either bring pool shoes that are safe to get wet while in the parks or flip flops. (Keep in mind that flip flops can be slippery when running.)
  • Spare clothes/socks – Don’t let wet clothes or socks ruin your day. Having a backup outfit or backup socks can help you to continue to enjoy your day.
  • Ziploc bags – If you are bringing phones or camera gear, having a ziploc bag on hand can help you to protect electronics from the rain. These are also great to store autograph books.
  • Ponytail holders – When it gets rainy, it can help to pull your hair out of your face. Bring along ponytail holders, a brush, or anything else you need to get ready for the rest of your day.

Plan park breaks around the rain.

While our weather is gorgeous, it doesn’t stay that way in the summer months. Extreme heat switches to torrential downpours. Instead of letting the rain ruin your plans, plan for rain as part of your adventure. This could mean that instead of expecting to spend the entire day at the theme park, you can plan your breaks around the rainy part of the day. Head back to the hotel and let the kids take a nap for a bit before heading back to the park to shut it down for the night.

When in doubt, ask cast members/staff members

Are you unsure about the best places to avoid rain? Ask the cast members/staff members at the park you attend where the best place to get out of the rain is. Sometimes they will be able to recommend a restaurant, lower trafficked attraction, or shopping area you can walk with the kids.

Character meet and greet with Aurora

Go to a character meal or special reservation

Character dining and some sit-down reservations can eat up large parts of your theme park day. In fact, many people will tell you to skip them in order to enjoy your time in the parks. Rainy days are the exception to this rule. Enjoy a special meal while avoiding the rain. It’s a win-win.
